Abstract

A depilatory comprises an alkaline solution of a stannite, an amphoteric compound serving as a buffer to combine with the excess of alkali present, and an alkali salt of a hydroxy polybasic organic acid, e.g. tartaric acid or citric acid, serving as a stabiliser to prevent decomposition of the stannite. The stannite is preferably one more soluble than calcium stannite and may, for example, be sodium stannite or barium stannite or mixtures thereof. The buffer compound may be aluminium hydroxide or zinc hydroxide or stannous hydroxide. The stabiliser may be Rochelle salt. The depilatory may be obtained by treating a solution of stannous chloride with a solution of sodium carbonate, separating and washing the precipitate, mixing the precipitate with Rochelle salt dissolved in a small amount of water and adding caustic soda solution to dissolve partly the stannous hydroxide.
