Abstract

404,149. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, and HUXLEY, M. F., 136A, Northfield Avenue, West Ealing, London. Feb. 2, 1933, No. 3223. [Class 4.] The telescopic members carrying a slotforming aerofoil on a plane are mounted so that the angles between their axis and perpendiculars to the longitudinal axis of the aerofoil are greater than the angle of friction of the materials used. An aerofoil 12 is mounted on parallel members 13, Fig. 1, set at an angle a to the perpendiculars to the longitudinal axis of the aerofoil, or, on a tapered plane, Fig. 4, at successively increasing angles a, a1, a2, so that the outward movement of the aerofoil is greater at the wider end of the plane. In the latter case the members 13 require to be hinged to the aerofoil. The members 13 may be straight, or curved in the vertical plane as shown in Fig. 7, which also shows roller guides 15 for the members 13 which have rollers 16 working in tubes 17. Alternatively, plain guides may be used. When curved guides are set at unequal angles, as in Fig. 4, the members 13 are jointed to the aerofoil by axial as well as perpendicular pivots. The curvature of the guides and members 13 may vary along the span, but the centres of curvature should lie on a straight line. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which curved guides having a common centre O are arranged substantially in one plane, the angles a, a1, a2 made by the tangents with the perpendiculars to the axis of the aerofoil 12 remaining constant.
