Abstract

Gum or resin formation in liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. fuel, lubricating or transformer oils, is retarded by adding 0.00025--0.01 per cent or more of one or more N.N<1>-diarylguanidine salts of aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids. Salts specified are those of di-p- or di - o - tolyl - guanidine, di - xylyl - guanidine, phenyl - p - tolyl - guanidine, di - a - naphthyl - guanidine, di - o - anisyl - guanidine, and diphenyl-guanidine, with oleic, stearic, palmitic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. For example, 0.002 per cent of di-o-tolyl-guanidine stearate or di-phenyl-guanidine butyrate is added to cracked gasolene.
