Abstract

403,682. Perambulator brakes. SIMPSON, B., and MURDOCH, H. B., c /o Simpson, Fawcett, & Co., Black Bull Street, Hunslet, Leeds. June 28, 1932, No. 18197. [Class 103 (i).] In perambulators in which the extension of the wheel base brings a brake into operation to maintain the vehicle stationary the movable pair of wheels is operated through spring controlled toggle mechanism to engage brake blocks fixed on the undercarriage. The axle 5 of the wheels 6 is slidable on bars 7 and is connected by a toggle formed by links 8 and levers 9 to a cross-bar 4 of the vehicle frame. When the toggle is broken by depression of treadle 14 springs 8x slide the axle 5 to extend the wheel base and the wheels 6 are brought against brake blocks 13. The springs normally maintain the toggle on the other side of its dead centre and hold the axle 5 against spring washers to prevent rattle. Intermediate stops may be provided to adjust the wheel-base. In a modification the axle of the movable wheels is carried by arms pivoted to the chassis.
