401,538. Drive of paper-machines &c. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 147, Queen Victoria Street, London.-(Assignees of Laabs, E. H. ; N. 12th Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.) Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3849. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1932. [Class 96.] In a drive for calenders of paper-machines &c. a shaft driven either by a main motor or through gearing and an overrunning clutch from an auxiliary motor, has a bearing member which also supports the slow speed wheel of the gear. In the form shown, the shaft 1, which carries a driving pinion 6, is driven at starting by an auxiliary motor through gears 29, 28, 27 and 25, the gear 25 which carries a ratchet wheel 32 being rotatable on the extension 26 of the member 12 wherein the main shaft bearing 15 is located. At low speeds the ratchet wheel co-operates with pawls 34 pivotally mounted on a wheel 35 keyed to the shaft 1, but when the speed of the shaft 48 of the main motor which is coupled to the wheel 35 reaches a critical value, the pawls disengage the ratchet wheel and the gear wheel 25 is ineffective.
