Abstract

<PICT:0400997/III/1> In a process for degreasing with volatile solvents in which solvent vapours are condensed by water-cooled surfaces, the cooling water is warmed to a temperature above the dew point of the atmosphere, whereby the condensed solvent is free from water. A tank 1 is divided by a heat-insulated wall 4 into chambers 2, 3 each provided with thermostatically controlled heaters 5, 6, and perforated work supports 13. Chamber 2 is filled with a solvent such as trichlorethylene which flows through an opening 18 into the lower part of chamber 3. A cooling coil 19 is mounted in the upper vapour space and is connected through pipes 25, 26 to a water main 21 and to a coil 14. Water flows from the main 21 provided with a valve 23 through the coil 14 where it is heated by the solvent, and the outflowing warmed water passes to the upper coil 19 through a pipe 25. The desired temperature, indicated by a thermometer 27, may be obtained by admitting cold water to the pipe 25 through a valve 24. Greasy metal articles are first immersed in liquid solvent in chamber 2 and are then transferred to chamber 3 containing solvent vapour. The condensed vapours formed by the coil 19 are collected in a gutter 29 and pass through pipe 32 to a clean solvent tank or are returned through pipe 31 to chamber 2. If desired solvent vapours are first brought into contact with coil 19 and then with a second cooler surface, the resulting condensate of solvent and water being collected separately. Specification 389,837 is referred to.
