Abstract

<PICT:0469027/III/1> In a process for degreasing metal strip with a volatile solvent, the strip passes through a solvent vapour zone or drying zone with one edge substantially vertically above the other edge. A suitable apparatus consists of a liquid solvent compartment 1 and a vapour compartment 2 provided with a heater 18, condensing coils 10 and a distillate trough 12 from which condensed solvent passes to compartment 1 or to an outside storage tank. Compartment 1 is connected through an overflow pipe 7 to the heated sump 9. Metal strip passes through an opening 3 in compartment 1, into a antechamber formed by a baffle 6 and having a condenser 5. The strip passes in a horizontal plane under flanged rollers 4 and through the cold solvent to an opening 22 into compartment 2. The strip then passes through the vapour zone under horizontal roller 15 and is then twisted into a vertical or inclined plane by two pairs of inclined or vertically mounted rollers 16, 17. The strip finally passes through a cooling chamber 19, and is wound up on a drum. The twisting of the strip facilitates draining and drying. Jets of solvent may be provided in compartment 1.
