Abstract

<PICT:0417188/III/1> Open-top apparatus for degreasing metal and other goods is provided, in addition to the condensing surfaces or cooling coils controlling the normal level of the solvent vapour, with a channel, gutter, or other conduit for a stream of cooling liquid in good thermal contact with the vessel walls whereby the walls above the normal vapour line are maintained at approximately atmospheric temperature. For example, a vapour-phase cleaning tank 1 having a perforated support 8 for the goods treated, and a sump 3 for trichlorethylene heated by a gas, electric, steam, or other heater 5 controlled by a thermostat 6, is provided with condensing coils 9 controlling the vapour line and, above this line, with a channel 12 welded to the outside of the tank and fitted with an inlet 13 and an outlet 14 for cooling water with a partition 17 to ensure proper circulation of the water. Preferably a gutter 15 with a drain cock 16 is provided for collecting condensed solvent, and the cooling water may be passed from the channel 12 to the coils 9.
