Abstract

1317960 Vapour degreasing apparatus DOW CHEMICAL CO 22 July 1970 35573/70 Heading C7E Vapour degreasing apparatus comprises a vapour zone housed in a main chamber 1 with means for confining a volatile liquid solvent below the vapour zone, and a heat-exchanger in open communication with the vapour zone; the heat exchanger comprises a surface 14 inclined and adapted to accommodate a falling liquid film comprising contaminated condensate, heating means to re-evaporate volatile solvent from said falling film, and trap means 17 at the lower end of said surface for collecting and removing high-boiling liquid contaminants. In use, degreasing solvent such as trichloroethylene is pumped by pump 18 via 19 to flow down surface 14 which is heated by steam, hot gas or electricity, giving rise to vapour which is confined below level 20 by watercooled tubes 2 and cold wall 4, condensed solvent passing via trough 3 and pipe 5 to separator 6, whence, after removal of water through 7, solvent passes back into vessel 1 through 8. The dirty articles may be dipped into the degreasing solvent or cleaning may be assisted using a spray lance; however, normal cleaning is achieved merely by condensation of vapour on the articles.
