Abstract

775,600. Cooling gases by direct contact with liquids; heating feedwater; heating steam boilers by hot liquids. PILO, C. W. Jan. 26, 1955 [Jan. 26. 1954], No. 2374/55. Classes 64(1) and 123(2) A non-aqueous liquid, having its boiling point much above 100‹C. and a negligible vapour pressure at its lower working temperature, is used to transfer heat from hot gases to water or another liquid by being brought first into direct contact with the hot gases, which flow in the same or opposite direction, and then into indirect contact with the water or other liquid. The hot gases heat the liquid almost to their own initial temperature, and the liquid gives up most of its absorbed heat to the water or other liquid. The heat transfer liquid may be tetradecane. In the form shown, hot waste gases, e.g. from the coke oven, are cooled in two stages in a directcontact heat exchanger 2, by tetradecane circulated in two closed circuits. The heated tetradecane from stage I is pumped by a pump 7 first to a steam generator 8, then to a feedwater heater 12, and then back to the spray in stage I. If dust has been entrained, part of the liquid can be drawn off at 13a for cleaning. The heated tetradecane from stage II is collected on a tray 4 and passes first to a liquid separator 16 where condensed water is removed, and is pumped by pump 19 through a water heater 21 back to the spray 5 of stage II. Part of the water from the heater 21 flows to the feed water heater 12. Fresh tetradecane may be supplied to the second circuit at 27 and tetradecane entrained by the hot gases in stage I and deposited in stage II is replaced through a duct 28 connecting the two circuits. The heat absorbed from the hot gases in stage II may be used in a heat pump.
