Abstract
400,954. Control of D.C. motors; thermal switches ; electrically-tripped switches. MARTIN BROS. ELECTRIC CO., 1858, East 40th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. April 25, 1932, No. 11862. Convention date, April 25, 1931. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] In apparatus for drying the hair or body comprising an electric fan for generating a stream of gas a device, which may be present to operate during a predetermined period, is provided to rotate the arm of a rheostat or its equivalent to cut out resistance in series with the fan motor armature thereby speeding up the motor and increasing the air circulation. The device may comprise clockwork, or a metal bellows expanded by heating electrically and acting through a rack and pinion. Another form of device shown in Fig. 28 comprises a drum 240 which is rotated against the action of a spring 241 and held by a pivoted pawl 259 engaging a stepped cam 256 on the drum; the pawl is gradually pressed outwards by a curved bimetallic strip arranged to straighten on heating by an electric heater. The drum framing carries contact fingers 246 .. 249 adapted to contact with strips 242 .. 245 on the drum. Fig. 29 illustrates the use of the above device. The main leads 277, 278 are connected to the heating coil 263 of the bimetallic strip, the motor 276, a gas-stream heating coil 288, and to a distributing switch 267 respectively. With the switch arm on the double contacts 290, 290a, or 289, 289a the motor is energized directly through lead 294; the contacts 291, 291a provide a connection 281 to a coil 278 in series with the motor and to the contact strips 242 .. 245 on the drum. Strips 242, 245 provide for the closure of the circuit of the coil 263, and strips 243, 244, as the drum rotates, short-circuit respectively a part and the whole of the coil 278 ; on further rotation coil 263 is de-energized, the drum stopped, and the motor left running at maximum speed. The device may be employed analogously to cut in successive portions of a resistance coil in series with the heater. Fig. 23 shows a device also employable for this purpose and comprising a pivoted plate 306 adapted to be gradually swung outwards by a bimetallic strip 310 having an insulated tip and heated by a coil 311. The movement of the plate releases pivoted fingers 297 engaged in a slot therein and breaks contacts at 302. The fingers may be raised and the contacts remade by a member 313 having an operating rod 313a.
