Abstract
399,198. Lubricant conveyed by fluid. KIMBALL, L. B., 355, Central Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. March 29, 1932, No. 9060. [Class 12 (iii).] A lubricating liquid is forced into the supply line fuel or the normal intake of an internal-combustion engine, by the pressure of the exhaust gases, which is transmitted through a pipe 41 to the top of a supply tank 39 and forces the liquid through a pipe 38 to a casing 1 in which are secured members 2, 4. The liquid passes through holes 7 into a chamber above a valve 18, which is carried at one end of a rod 13, the other end having a head 17. The rod 13 passes through a plunger 12, cap 11, and a flexible diaphragm 14 which are urged upwardly by a spring 10 bearing on the cap 11. A tapered valve 22, which controls an orifice 21 in the member 2, is screwed into the valve 18 and the valves 18, 22 are adjusted relatively by rotation of a rod 26 having pin-and-slot engagement at 25 with the valve 22. The valves 18, 22 are depressed by one arm 30 of a bell-crank lever, the other arm 31 of which is connected to the accelerator pedal. When the engine is idling, the valve 18 is closed, and the space above it and the chambers 19, 20 are full of the lubricating liquid. When the engine is accelerated, the arm 30 of the bell-crank lever depresses the rod 13, thus moving the valves 18, 22 and the plunger 12 downwards, and the plunger 12 forces the liquid into the chamber 19, through the orifice 21 into the chamber 20, and through a pipe 42 to the carburetter. The pressure of the exhaust gases then continues to force the liquid into the pipe 42. By rotating the rod 26 the flow of liquid past the valve 22 may be altered, and this enables the apparatus to be used with engines of varying size. The bell-crank lever 30, 31 is mounted on an eccentric 33 which is oscillated by a lever 34 connected through a cable 36 to the dashboard, whereby the amount that the throttle valve can be opened before the liquid is introduced into the main fuel stream may be varied.
