Abstract

398,824. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Spanner, H. J. ; 117, Chausseestrasse, Berlin.) Dec. 19, 1931, No. 22696/33. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1930. Divided on 398,799, [Group XL.] [Class 38 (iv).] A source of light comprises two lamps of the type described in Specification 397,162, [Group XL], provided with cathodes of the type described in Specification 356,234, [Group XL], connected in parallel, and the starting voltage of one lamp is greater than both starting and normal running potentials of the other. If one lamp has a filling of argon in addition to metal vapour, the other lamp may be given a higher starting potential by adding iodine, neon or helium to the filling. The lamps may be mounted in a common reflector. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, each lamp, instead of being of the type set forth above has the following characteristics: (1) The electrodes are oxide coated and are preferably heated by the discharge only; (2) the filling consists of a mixture of rare gas with mercury and possibly other metal vapour; (3) the operating temperature of the lamp is greatly above atmospheric, and the device will start without auxiliary means on a supply circuit of about 220 volts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
