Abstract
398,011. Ships' hulls. ISHERWOOD, SIR J. W., 4, Lloyds Avenue, London. July 26, 1932, No. 21097. [Class 113 (ii).] Mercantile ships have the sides of the middle body portion curved inwards from the loadwater line to the floor line without a sharp turn of bilge. The form is determined by first setting out a rectangle equal to the required midship section area of the ship, the upperhorizontal line A-A of the rectangle corresponding to the required water-line and the base following the bottom of the vessel. The beam of the ship is then increased to any desired extent between 5 and 15 per cent, and the frame-moulding line 2 is carried downwards at first almost vertically and then in a fair inwardly-falling curve until it joins the bottom at not less than one-third of the maximum beam. The midship area thus determined is approximately the same as that of the rectangle. The frame-moulding line intersects the bilge diagonal at not less than 14 per cent of the total length of the latter. A formula for the arc-form is given. The curve may be continued above the water-line upwards or this portion may be made wall-sided. Specification 21177/97, [Class 113, Ships &c., Div. I], is referred to.
