397,440. Uniting by fusion. DIETRICH ROHRLEITUNGSBAU AKT.- GES., E. O., 2, Leopoldstrasse, Bitterfeld, Germany. May 8, 1933, No. 13386. Convention date, May 9, 1932. [Class 83 (iv).] A welded joint between hollow bodies such as pipes consists of internal and external seams varying in cross section from a maximum to a minimum in inverse ratio to one another. The external seam c has its largest cross section at the top of the point and merges to a minimum at the bottom, whereas the cross section of the interior seam d is largest at the bottom of the joints. The respective seams may be in the same transverse plane, or in different transverse planes. The plane or planes may also be inclined to the axis of the pipe. In Fig. 5 the ends of the pipe are in contact and are provided with an external butt strap e of uniform thickness and an internal butt strap f of variable thickness inserted in a recess in the pipes. The tapered seams c, d are effected between the edges of the straps and the pipes. To join pipes which are not in alignment, the pipe b may be formed with a spherical spigot g engaging a similar recess in the pipe a. A tube bend may comprise a series of segments similarly welded to each other by internal and external tapered seams.
