Abstract

696,863. Making pipe fittings. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 26, 1950], No. 21799/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). -[Also in Group XXVIII] Welding by fusion.-A tubular Y-piece comprises branch tubes 2, 3, merging together and united by a welded joint 4 extending longitudinally of the Y-piece, a main tube 1 united to the branches by a transverse welded joint 9, and a reinforcing fillet 6 extending across the crotch between the branches and united to them by their welded joint. The fillet has a tapered free edge 11. The branches are of greater wall thickness than the tube 1. The curved branch tubes have their ends bevelled and placed in register, a groove is formed by recessing the opposed faces of the branches at the crotch, and the fillet is placed in the groove which is filled with weld metal 10. The apex of the united branches is then removed at 8, and the opening is expanded to form a circular seat for the tube 1.
