Abstract

394,459. Blanks for the manufacture of boxes, baskets, &c. LAIRD & SON, Ltd., J. and BUCHAN, J. C., 101, David Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow. April 15, 1932, No. 10798. [Classes 18, 21, and 133.] A blank of stiff paper, paper-board, thin metal, or the like, used in or for the manufacture of boxes, baskets and like containers, comprises a strip or band formed with cross slits or slots 1 and provided with marginal portions 2, 3 capable of being bent or folded over so as to lie behind the blank, which may then be bent to curvilinear form as shown in Fig. 2, the extensions 4, 5 of the portions 2, 3 being inserted into the end 10 of the blank and secured to the ends of the portions 2, 3 by glueing or other fastening means. Creases 8, 9 in the slotted portion of the blank permit this portion to bulge slightly and the portions 2, 3 behind the slotted portions may be coloured for decorative purposes. To form a. circular box, a reinforcing collar 12 and bottom disc are inserted into the ring, the collar projecting above the ring to provide a neck for receiving a lid formed from another similar ring 13, 14, 15 with a disc 17 inserted to form a cover. The slotted portion of the lid blank is creased centrally at 16 and the marginal portions 14, 15 overlap one another, the portion 15 providing a seating for the disc 17. The slotted portion of the lid need not be creased, and an opening covered with transparent material may be provided in the top disc of the lid. A modified box is oval in shape and has no reinforcing collar, the lid simply fitting over the body portion. A basket handle may be formed from a blank according to the invention by bending the folded blank into arch-shaped formation and securing the ends to the reinforcing collar of the basket, the collar then being covered with a body portion formed from a blank of the kind described.
