Abstract

392,769. Retorts for low-temperature carbonization. SHARP, F. F., 6, Baring Avenue, Bradford, Yorkshire. July 6, 1932, No. 19079. [Class 55 (i).] The carbonizing-chamber comprises a pair of solid side-plates 1 which are heated and carry between them two sets of louvres 2 arranged on edge in staggered formation, and distanced apart, to provide passages for the escape of distillates. The chamber is built into a brick structure 3 having side heating flues 4, and the distillates escape into a space 7 around the louvres. The retort is thus heated on two opposite sides, and the distillates pass through the other two sides. Two chambers may be arranged side by side in one brick structure. In a modification, Fig. 8, the louvres 2 are arranged in the same inclined plane, and afford upwardly inclined passages for the escape of distillates.
