Abstract
384,172. Low-temperature carbonization. FRANCOIS, C., Jamioulx, Belgium. April 23, 1932, No. 11768. [Class 55 (i).] Coal is distilled at low temperature (550- 850‹ C.) in a series of compartments or cups 1, having between them passages 2 for escape of distillates, or to facilitate heating. The cups are joined and formed into plates which are superposed to exert pressure on, and prevent swelling of the charge. The cups are charged from a hopper 3, the charge being compressed by a rammer 4, and are loaded on to trollies 5 which are moved through a continuously operating tunnel oven 8 heated by burners 10. Distillates are withdrawn through outlets 16, partitions 17 being provided to enable distillates at various temperatures to be collected separately. Auxiliary burners 10a are provided near the doors, to compensate for the cooling due to the periodical opening of the doors. A trolley 20 conveys the charge to a discharge apparatus 21 comprising a tilting device 22, Fig. 7a, by which the cup plates are separated, these plates being mounted in guides 23 connected by rods 24 pivoted at 25, and having pins 26 sliding in slots 27. In modifications, the charge may be heated in ovens periodically charged and discharged and in contact with heating gases which are withdrawn together with the distillates.
