[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] Vertical or inclined retorts of narrow crosssection are provided with top and bottom fittings whereby either containers f enclosing the charge, or the charge in a loose condition, may be fed to and discharged from the retorts. The containers which are employed for distillation at low temperature, and may be of the kind described in Specification 287,586, [Class 55 (i)], are introduced into each retort by a rotary drum e<2> having a pocket e<3> which is caused to register alternately with an inlet opening e<4> and with the retort. After passage through the retort each container is supported on a grating g<4> through which arms g<3> of a rotary discharge device pass, and is propelled along the grating and guided by channels g<6> in the end walls to the discharge drum e<2>. When loose coal or the like is coked at high temperatures, a cap e<6> is removed from the top of the shaft which is then filled with the charge, which, after treatment is discharged by the arms g<3>, acting as breakers through a door g<2>. The retorts are heated externally by flues b, supplied with heating gases from channels c, the temperature in the flues varying from 800 to 1500‹ C., according to whether low- or high - temperature distillation is desired.
