Carbonizing apparatus.-Apparatus for drying and carbonizing fuel such as coal so as to obtain briquettes, comprises moulds on an endless chain the upper stretch .of which passes through the lower compartment of an externally heated tube, the upper compartment, separated from the lower by a perforated plate, serving as a collector for the distillates. The oven is formed by a. tubular chamber g divided longitudinally into two compartments either by a perforated metal plate k, or by a series of rollers. The upper chamber forms a space for collection of distillates which escape through a series of outlets j, j<1> baffles in the tube separating the distillates. Through the lower chamber passes an endless conveyer having one or more chains of scrapers which fit this chamber closely, and comprising segments u, Fig. 7, which form moulds in which briquettes are made. The material is fed from a hopper e having a piston i which presses the charge into the moulds. The material may be heated eleetrically or by a burner the hot gases from which entirely surround the chamber g in the carbonizing zone a, and heat this chamber only at the bottom and sides in the distillation zone b. Constrictions p<1>, p<2>, and p<3> isolate the various heating zones, and a cooling zone d is provided which may be cooled by air or water circulation. The chain conveyer may be completely enclosed so as to exclude air.
