Abstract

391,545. Materials for making gas, coke, &c. DUPONT, G. F. M. and PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY RESEARCH CO., 7, West 10th Street, Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A. Jan. 11, 1932, No. 814. [Class 55 (ii).] Carbonaceous materials such as lignites, bituminous schists, petroleums, peat, with or without porous materials such as coke, charcoal or infusorial earth and clay, are distilled in the presence of alkali or alkaline earth salts of the fatty acids which give or form methyl groups. Suitable acids are acetic, butyric, oleic, stearic, and naphthenic. The distillation may be assisted by the addition of catalysts such as metallic oxides or powdered metals or by a basic substance such as lime. In an example, sulphur-containing lignite is distilled with calcium acetate and iron filings. The salts of the fatty acids are present in such quantity that the phenol groups present in the distillation are replaced by methyl groups.
