Abstract

In a method of making hard tough alloys of cobalt and tungsten containing 20-35 per cent of tungsten, the metals are heated in close association to a temperature at which a solid solution of the tungsten and cobalt will be formed, i.e. above 1100 DEG C., the alloy so formed being cooled and finally aged for several hours at a temperature below 1050 DEG C., e.g. 600-700 DEG C. The alloys may contain up to ,05 per cent of carbon and may be machined before ageing. In an example an alloy containing 34 per cent of tungsten may be made by melting the cobalt-tungsten mixture or sintering the powdered materials for one or two hours at 1450 DEG C., cooling the alloy and reheating to 600 DEG C. Specification 279,490, [Class 72, Iron &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 356,089.
