Abstract

Oct. 27, 1932, No. 30125. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] In a lamp having a positive column discharge which is viewed end-on, and having a container-like cathode 2 and an annular anode 6 disposed in front of it, the cathode 2 contains a vaporizable metal such as sodium, caesium, or cadmium and has a central aperture 5 in the walls 4 facing the anode 6, the length of the cathode is more than twice the distance of the wall 4 from the anode. With this arrangement a part of the positive column passes through the aperture 5 and the cathode is strongly heated. The end 8 of the tube may be an inserted plain glass window and is conveniently plane. The electrodes are so arranged that a discharge on their outer edges is prevented. The lamp may have a neonhelium filling at a pressure of 3 mm. Dimensions, current, and cathode temperature of a typical lamp are given.
