Abstract

388,494. Four-stroke and two-stroke engines. GRUEBLER, F., P.O.B. Wollishofen, Zurich, Switzerland. Nov. 16, 1931, No. 31646. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] The cylinder charge is stratified by additional compressed air, or mixture, admitted by transverse tangential ports e, controlled by a slide valve f, or a rotary valve, and having nozzle-like form ; a rotating layer, which may be annular when the piston has a curved top, thus supports, at the beginning of the compression stroke, the turbulent main charge admitted, in the four-stroke engine shown, by an overhead valve c. The additional air is supplied in accordance with altitude by venting the excess of air compressed in a rotarypiston compressor. In a two-stroke engine a sleeve valve controls the exhaust and both the main and additional compressed-air ports which are supplied from different cells of the same compressor. In a multi-cylinder engine the compressed air is supplied through & passage g common to all the cylinders. The invention is applicable to mixture or liquid-fuel injection engines.
