Abstract

388,152. Regulating draught in boiler furnaces. THORNTON, A. A., 7, Essex Street, Strand, London.-(Mineralochemie Akt.-Ges. f³r Metallurgische und Chemische Produkte; 23, Wiedener Hauptstrasse, Vienna.) Dec. 7, 1931, No. 33871. [Class 51 (i).] In boiler furnaces more particularly for locomotives having a blower, fluid-injecting nozzles in the firebox, a valve connected with a supply of fluid under pressure and connected to the blower and injecting nozzles and also controlled in conformity with the throttle valve, manually operated means are provided for controlling the operation of the valve independently of the throttle valve and of the furnace door operating means. As shown in Fig. 1, a valve 3 to which steam may be supplied from the boiler or other source through a connection 73, or compressed air supplied by a connection 78, may be retained on its seat by a hand-lever 10 or released when it is desired to permit its opening by steam or other fluid pressure acting on the piston 11. When the valve 3 is in its closed position and the throttle valve of the engine is also closed, steam passes from the back of the valve 3 through pipe 16 to the chamber 28, Figs. 3 and 4, of a rotary control valve 22 operated in conformity with the throttle valve lever a. From the chamber 28 steam passes through holes 37, 38 in the valve through a tapered slot 36 and hole 35 respectively in a plate 24 to chambers 29, 31 in the valve casing and thence through a pipe 40<1> to the injector nozzle in the firebox and through pipe 18 to the back of the piston 11 ; a part of the steam also passes from the chamber 29 through an opening 33 in the plate 24, port 39 in the valve, and opening 34 in the plate to the pipe 17 and chamber 4 between the valve 3 and piston 11 from which it passes through a port 5 to the blower. When it is desired to increase the supply of steam to the blower and injector with the throttle valve closed, the lever 10 is operated to permit the valve 3 to be lifted by the steam pressure acting on the piston through the pipe 18 and steam then flows direct from the pipe 73 to the chamber 4 and thence to the blower and through the pipe 18 and ports and chambers in the control valve to the injector in the firebox. When the throttle valve of the engine is opened by rotating the lever a and control valve 22 anticlockwise, the port 37 in the control valve moves opposite to wider portions of the slot 36 and more steam is supplied to the injecting nozzles in the firebox while the steam supply to the blower is gradually shut off by the port 39 being closed by the plate 24. The supply of steam to the back of the piston 11 is also cut off by the closure of the port 35 in the plate 24. Instead of the rotary valve 22 a reciprocating valve may be employed.
