Smoke-consuming; air supply, regulating; blast apparatus.-Air is supplied above the grate of a furnace by means of nozzles arranged in the front corners of the furnace, the air being first heated in pipes arranged at the sides of the furnace on a level with the fuel or in a tortuous passage within the nozzle itself ; steam or compressed air jets may be arranged at the base of the nozzle to assist the draught. In a stationary furnace, pipes G, Fig. 1, are arranged on each side of the grate, terminating at the rear in depending portions having adjustable funnels I and at the front in nozzles K. with flattened ends which emit sheets of air over the fuel. Compressed air or steam is supplied at the base of the nozzles K from nozzles K<1>. In order to increase the supply of air to the furnace when fresh fuel has been supplied, the fire-door, when opened, engages with the stem W, Figs. 4 and 8, of a valve U arranged within a by-pass T around the valve S, Fig. 4, which shows the invention applied to a locomotive furnace. The valve stem W passes through a cylinder V filled with oil and containing a piston u<1>, having a small aperture u<2> and valved port u<3>, and a spring u acting upon the piston to retain the valve U normally in the closed position. Upon closing the fire-door, the valve U gradually closes under the action of the spring u. As shown in Fig. 4, the screened air-intake funnels 0 are connected to the pipes G by elbows P, and are adjusted by toothed gearing which may be locked in different positions.
