Abstract

790,064. Controlling oil burners. NUWAY HEATING PLANTS, Ltd. May 11, 1956 [June 6, 1955], No. 16122/55. Class 75(1) Control means for a burner having two or more nozzles to which oil is delivered under pressure comprises a chamber 2 having an oil inlet 3 and a valve controlled oil outlet 6, at least two passages 9, 10 connecting the chamber to first and second burner nozzles 11, 12 or banks of burner nozzles and controlled by valves 13, 14 adapted to be opened against the action of springs 19, 20 by oil pressure within the chamber and means including a valve 23 whereby an equalizing oil pressure may be applied to one spring- loaded valve 14 to maintain it in closed position. The stems of the spring-loaded valves 13 extend through a wall of the chamber 2 into cavities 15, 16 and flexible bellows 17, 18 are connected to the stems and the chamber wall . The upper cavity 15 is open to atmosphere so that when oil pressure is raised in the chamber 2 by closing the valve 8 in the pipe 7-connecting the chamber outlet 6 with the suction side of the pump 5 the spring-loaded valve 13 opens to supply oil to the nozzle 11. The lower cavity 16 is connected by the valve 23 to either the delivery side of the pump to equalize the oil pressure in the chamber 2 so that the spring-loaded valve 14 remains closed or to the suction side of the pump to allow the oil pressure in the chamber 2 to open the spring-loaded valve 14. Alternatively the valve 23 may only open and close the connection between the cavity 16 and the delivery side of the pump and the cavity may have a restricted outlet to the return pipe 7. The valves 8, 23 may be actuated automatically in response to temperature or pressure changes or on a time basis. The nozzle 12 is not brought into operation unless a flame is detected at the other nozzle 11. Instead of the bellows 17, 18 the valves may have pistons slidable in the cavities 15, 16.
