Abstract
A refractory hard alloy suitable for cutting tools, dies, heating elements of electric furnaces &c. comprises 20-90 per cent of zirconium, the remainder being mainly tungsten. The alloy may contain up to 20 per cent of iron, aluminium and manganese, added singly or in combination with or without 0.5-10 per cent of tantalum. Carbon is present only as an impurity. In an example, tungsten ore or ferro-tungsten, zirconium ore, and carbon for reduction purposes, are melted in an electric furnace to produce an alloy containing 50 per cent of tungsten, 30 per cent of zirconium and 20 per cent of iron. The product may be cast into an ingot or may be pulverized, placed in a mould, compressed and sintered.
