Abstract

Liquids, particularly tars and oils, are distilled or concentrated by passing the liquid with a gas or vapour other than the vapours distilled from the liquid through a heated pipe, the velocity of the added gas or vapour being not less than the critical velocity for producing turbulent flow. Coal tar is passed into a pipe A at the rate of 6 galls. per hour and mixed with coal gas supplied from a pipe B at 540 cu. ft. per hour. The mixture is passed through a coil C 30 feet long and 1 inch in diameter and the coil is heated to 280-300 DEG C. by combustion gasses passing through a duct G. Residual liquid is suspended in a vessel D and the vapours evolved are condensed in a cooler K, <PICT:0387459/III/1> the gases being recirculated by a pump L. The process is also suitable for the distillation or concentration of glycerine, sugar, milk, and similar organic products.
