Abstract
<PICT:0822933/III/1> In the distillation of liquid mixtures of high boiling-range, e.g. mixtures containing fatty acids and glycerine, the liquid is passed through a film evaporator of the liquid-downflow type; the vapours evolved in the evaporator are condensed, e.g. in a dephlegmator, and the condensate is distilled in a further film evaporator of the liquid-downflow type. A fatty acid mixture is fed through inlet 1 into preheater 2, where it is heated to about 150 DEG C. About 1 to 3% by weight of steam, supplied through pipe 4, is injected into the preheated acid mixture, and it then passes up through tube-evaporator 3, where 20 to 50% of the mixture is vaporized. The liquid-vapour mixture is discharged into vessel 6 where a separation of the two phases is effected. The separated liquid flows down film evaporator 7, where further vaporization takes place. The residual liquid then enters still 9 which is divided into two or more chambers, by baffles (not shown), each of which is provided with a heater-coil and a tube 10 for the injection of steam. The unevaporated residue is withdrawn through outlet 11. The vapours formed in evaporator 7 and still 9 flow up into vessel 6. The vapours which leave the top of vessel 6 flow to dephlegmator 13, and the condensate formed therein is led to film evaporator 14 and its associated still 15. The vapours which are not condensed in dephlegmator 13 and the re-evaporated light fractions from evaporator 14 and still 15 are mixed, and the vapour-mixture is subjected to two further stages of dephlegmation and partial re-evaporation. Dephlegmator 16 is maintained at a lower temperature than dephlegmator 13, and dephlegmator 19 is maintained at a lower temperature than dephlegmator 16. Product-fractions are withdrawn from stills 15, 18 and 21 via outlets 22, 23 and 24 respectively; while steam and odorous components are withdrawn via pipe 25.
