Abstract

386,916. Furnace walls. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Assignees of Harter, I.; 45, East 82nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 24, 1932, No. 23738. Convention date, Feb. 20. [Class 51 (i).] In a furnace heated by pulverized fuel and having the walls lined with water tubes spaced apart, the tubes 10, Fig. 2, are provided with radial metallic studs 12 having enlarged heads 17 or frusto-conical studs welded by means of their longer ends to the tubes. The studs are embedded in refractory material on which may accumulate slag from the fuel. As shown in Fig. 4, the studs 22 are arranged in staggered rows and on opposite walls of the tubes so as to project into the spaces between adjacent tubes which are also formed with projections 30 on the side of the tubes exposed to the furnace. As shown in Fig. 8, the portions of the tubes 10 exposed to higher temperature in the furnace may be provided with short studs 18 between the staggered rows 20, the studs being covered with refractory material 46. Modifications are described in which the studs are without heads. Specification 386,277 is referred to.
