Pulverulent and small fuel furnaces ; casings and walls; ashes and the like, collecting and removing.-In a furnace burning a slag forming fuel, a pool of molten slag is maintained on the floor, and a cooling medium is circulated through a plurality of water-tubes 4, 5, 6 embedded in the furnace walls. The walls are of individual blocks 11 formed with refractory faces and metallic backings and held by clamps 14. The walls may expand independently of one another, the lower headers 7, 8, 9 being carried on spring supports. The floor comprises a single or double course of brick 16 having expansion joints 19 and laid loosely on plates 18 supported on beams 15. On the floor is a layer of dolomite. One or more pulverulent fuel burners 21 project a flame horizontally close to the floor, so as to keep the slag molten. The slag is tapped at 22, and runs down a spout 23, port 23<1> of which is pivoted at 25 upon ears 24 and has an apron 26 which closes the inner port when the part 23<1> is raised. The tubes above the tap-hole 22 and door 27 enter a header 28, which is connected to headers 29 and 8. Air may be introduced beneath the floor through the conduit 33. Limestone, felspar, or other substance may be added to the pool of slag to render it suitable for manufacturing purposes.
