Abstract

386,722. Variable speed gearing. CROWSLEY, P. S., Mill Hill Engineering Works, Edenbridge, Kent. Sept. 26, 1931, No. 26908. [Class 80 (ii).] When the main clutch pedal of a vehicle is depressed, a shaft 28 is rotated, and the motion is communicated by rods 26 and arms 8 to a hollow slotted shaft 7, on the lateral independent halves of which are mounted two pairs of loose cranks 20, and thence to a pair of gear selector forks 2. The gear selection is effected by means of a handle 17 and dial 18. A cam plate 16 is connected to the handle through bevel wheels. On the inner surface of each of the cranks 20 is an arcuate slot 21, Fig. 4, adapted to engage with a sliding key or pin 22 on an inner shaft 9 also in two parts. A rod 12 slidable in brackets 6 is connected at its ends to the rods 9 by plates 11. The rod 12 is also in two parts each of which bears a pin engaging a groove in the plate 16. Movement of the handle 17 reciprocates a half-rod 12 and thence one of the shafts 9 and a pin 22, so as to determine which slot and pin shall engage, and thus, when the clutch pedal is depressed, which fork shall be moved and in which direction. The arrangement described is for use with a box giving four forward speeds, or three forward and a reverse speed. If the box has a reverse speed in addition to four forward speeds a modified arrangement of forks is used in which two arms project above the pivot 4 and three below, one of the latter being used to engage reverse speed.
