Abstract

343,183. Variable-speed gearing, AUSTIN, SiR H., Lickey Grange, Bromsgrove, Worcester. Nov. 21, 1929, No. 35601. [Class 80 (ii).] A change-speed gear for motor vehicles having coaxial driving and driven shafts A, B comprises an eccentrically-mounted sleeve C having internal teeth c at one end permanently in mesh with external teeth a<1> on the driving-shaft A and an axiallymovable arbor D coaxial with the shafts A, B and permanently splined in the driven shaft B, the arbor having teeth d adapted to be engaged with teeth a in the shaft A and having keyed thereto a wheel F having internal teeth #<2> adapted to be engaged with external teeth C<SP>1> on the sleeve C. The teeth a<1> are also in mesh with a wheel e rigidly mounted on a lay shaft E on which is splined a sleeve e<1> having two sets of teeth e2, e3 adapted to co-operate with external teeth f, #<1> on the wheel F. Reversing wheels G, H mounted on a sleeve controlled by a fork g<2> engaging a groove g<3> are adapted to be engaged with the wheels e<2>, #. For first and second speeds, the sleeve e<1> is moved by a fork e<5> engaging a groove e<4> to bring the teeth e<3>, #<1> and e<2>, f respectively into engagement. For third speed, the arbor is moved by a fork J engaging a groove #<3> to bring the teeth #<2>, cl into engagement. For top speed, the arbor is moved to bring the teeth a, d into engagement, giving a direct drive. The gears are controlled by a lever K which is rocked longitudinally to move the fork J, and laterally to move the forks g<2>, e5 through levers g<1>, e<6>. The foot of the lever has a recess k adapted, when the lever is rocked laterally, to engage pegs e', g<4> on the levers e<6>, g<1>, but the peg g4 cannot be engaged unless the lever K is lifted against a spring k<1>. The levers e<6>, g<1> are provided with notches into one or other of which passes one of two wings k<2> on a locking arm k3 which is moved laterally but not longitudinally by the lever K. Alternatively, the wheel F may be loose on the arbor and constantly in mesh with the teeth c<1>, means being provided whereby it can be connected to and disconnected from the arbor or the wheel may be splined on the arbor and moved endwise independently thereof.
