[Class 18.] In a case or carton for cigarettes, cigars, matches, or like articles, the body of the case is provided on one or on opposite sides at its open end with strips hinged or otherwise foldable together and connected to a sliding band encircling the case, so that by sliding the band along the case to open it the strips next to the mouth of the case are moved to be outside the case and at a right or other angle thereto, and on a reverse movement of the band, the strips fold across and act as a lid for the case. To the sides 1, 1a of the case, at its mouth are connected strips 2, 2a, 2b, 2c which are hingedly connected together, the strip 2c being hinged also to a band 3 which is slidably mounted on the case. When the band 3 is moved down the case the strips move from the position shown in Fig. 1 where they enclose the ends of the articles in the case to the fully open position shown in Fig. 3. The band 3 preferably has frictional contact with the sides of the case so that it may be held in any position. The box may be made from a blank, for example as shown in Fig. 4. This comprises a rectangular portion, with crease lines such as A and extensions 4, to form the walls 1, 1a and the narrow walls. Above this is another portion 5b with a cut-away portion 5a and having crease lines such as B to form the strips 2, 2a, 2b, 2c. Above this is another portion 3 with an extension 3a and crease lines to enable it to fold to form the band 3. The bottom of the case is formed by an extension 5. If desired the folding strips may only be connected to one edge of the mouth of the case and may be of such a width as to extend completely across the mouth of the case in the closed position. In a modification only three strips are employed, and the walls of the case to which they are not connected are continued above the other walls and have projections at their top edges to limit the upward movement of the band 3, which may have projecting tongues to facilitate its manipulation. In another modification the walls carrying the strips are continued a short distance above the other walls. Modified blanks are shown to form these boxes. For deeper boxes extra strips may be added and the corners of the box may be slit or perforated. The band preferably fits frictionally around the case so that it will stay in any desired position.
