G. ; 212, Smith Street, Flint, Michigan, U.S.A.) April 9, 1931, No. 10458. Convention date, July 24, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 130.] In order to bind together the strands of tobacco without materially blocking the air passages, the ends of the cigarettes are dipped in a solution containing a binding material in a volatile solvent, which is then evaporated, preferably by means of heat or an air blast, leaving a thin film on the tobacco strands and on the wrapper. The solution, which may be a colloidal or a true solution, may consist of celluloid or a cellulose ester in acetone, collodion in ether or alcohol or a mixture of the two, or a cellulose acetate solution, or may comprise a natural or synthetic gum or resin, e.g. vinylite or glyptal resin in acetone, or latex in water ; it may also contain in suspension a filler such as aluminium, chromium, or bronze powder. The cigarettes may be carried through a trough 8 containing the solution by belts 6, 7 which convey the cigarettes from the wrapping to the packing machine. The trough may be moved upwards intermittently to treat the cigarettes, or may be moved forwards with the belts for a predetermined distance.
