Abstract

<PICT:0588079/IV/1> A cigarette has a filter plug 2 of non-inflammable synthetic resin in film form, folded or pleated, to provide a number of narrow passages, the plug prevents the passage of small particles of tobacco and is moisture-proof and thus does not affect the flavour of the smoke. A suitable resin is polyvinyl chloride, or polyvinylidene chloride. The plug is enclosed in a paper tube 3 which is connected to a cigarette 4 by a band 5 which may constitute a mouthpiece. The plugs are formed by drawing the films from spools through guides and formers where they are folded and pleated and meet the paper strip which is formed into the surrounding tube, adhesive and heat being applied. Subsequently, the continuous rod thus formed is cut into lengths sufficient for one, two or more cigarettes.
