Abstract

385,478. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Soc. Generale de Constructions Electriques et Mecaniques Alsthom ; 146, Avenue des Champs Elysees, Paris.) March 7, 1932, No. 6857. Convention date, March 5, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] The arc formed on separating the movable contact 15 from the fixed contact 9 is extinguished by means of an insulating shutter 6 which may be smooth, corrugated, grooved, or recessed, and is dropped between the contacts under the control of the operating mechanism 18, 19 of the contact 15. The arc is thus compelled to pass below the shutter and is confined between the plates 1, 2 of steatite, quartz, or the like, extinction being facilitated by the piston-like action of the shutter, in descending, driving out the air from the'chamber 4 and upward through the arc. Holes 22 and metallic gauzes 23 arrest the hot gases and cavities 24 are provided to collect the metallic particles. The switch may be shunted by another switch normally carrying the load current and may, for high voltages, have a series of shutters arranged side by side to .provide a lengthened path for the arc. The arrangement is stated to increase the ratio superficial area/volume of the arc, whereby a greater rate of disappearance of charges at the zero of an A.C. cycle occurs.
