Abstract
417,636. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Boden, S. H. ; R.D. 1, Monroeville Road, Turtle Creek, and Schofield, S. T. ; 810, Ewing Street, Wilkinsburg, both in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Jan. 30, 1934, No. 3167. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1933. [Class 38 (v).] An arc-extinguishing device, for mounting below each of the fixed contacts 15 of an oil switch, comprises a structure of insulating material with a longitudinal passage of slot-like cross-section along which an arc can be drawn, magnetic means for moving the arc transversely across said passage, and a side vent or vents communicating with the passage in the neighbourhood of the initial striking of the arc at the side of the passage towards which the arc is moved. In the construction shown, the arc extinguisher comprises a series of groups of slotted plates, each group comprising a pair of plates of insulating material between which is placed a plate of magnetic material having an insulating lining. The slots 45 in the upper sets of insulating plates 43, Fig. 5, have portions 49 extending to the edges of the plates, which provide the side vents in the direction towards which the arc is moved. The intermediate insulating plates 44, Fig. 7, are not vented, but the lower plates 65, Fig. 10, are vented in the opposite direction to the upper plates. The fixed contact 15 comprises a pair of self-adjusting contact fingers 83, Fig. 16, pivoted at 84 and controlled by springs 87. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 401,166.
