Abstract
A road-surfacing &c. composition comprises mineral aggregate, the individual particles of which have an inner coating of a stable bituminous cement and an outer coating of a bituminous flux free from volatile matter, fluid at ordinary atmospheric temperatures, and of from 40 to 80 per cent of 100 penetration. The composition is spread on a foundation and consolidated by rolling &c. In an example, mineral aggregate is coated first with a heavy refined bituminous cement having a penetration of 10 to 70, applied at a temperature of about 400 DEG F., and with a second coating of flux comprising the refined bituminous residuum resulting from a heat treatment of crude bitumen at temperatures of 250 DEG F. upwards, the flux being fluid at ordinary atmospheric temperatures and of a consistency of from 40 to 80 per cent of 100 penetration bitumen.
