Abstract
Polythene compositions are bonded to surfaces by cementing to the surfaces a layer of asbestos, of such thickness that the cement does not penetrate through it, and thereafter covering the asbestos with polythene composition; or by cementing to the surfaces a layer of asbestos the uncemented surface of which has been coated previously with polythene composition; or by mixing the polythene composition, in a finely divided state, with asbestos, attaching the mixture to the surface with an asbestos cement and after the cement has set, subjecting the mixture to heat and pressure, e.g., with a heated roller, until a layer of polythene has been formed over the surface. The polythene composition may be applied in the fused state or dissolved in a solvent, e.g., a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon which is afterwards evaporated at temperatures greater than 60 DEG C. In the former method, a flame gun is preferably used as described in Specification 551,339; or in the case of metal tubes as described in Specification 585,395. Alternatively the polythene may be applied by dispersing it in a solution of one or more normally solid film-forming materials in a volatile liquid. Other layers may be applied, e.g., asbestos may be fused on to the polythene and tiles may then be cemented on to the asbestos. Specification 432,831, [Group II], also is referred to.
