Abstract

In the production of artificial silk or the like from viscose, there is added to the coagulating bath (Napper bath), a sulphuric acid solution of a proteid material which has been subjected to slow and controlled action by sulphuric acid until evolution of hydrogen sulphide ceased. Dissolution of materials containing keratin or the like is facilitated by means of metallic salts, for example, chromium salts. In an example, chrome leather is dissolved in sulphuric acid solution and allowed to stand for seven days, when it is added to a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate, and glucose.
