382,078. Cooling lubricant. BARBAROU, M. J. B., 28, Boulevard d'Argenson, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Oct. 31, 1931, No. 30239. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1930. [Class 12 (iii).] A combined air heater and oil cooler for internal-combustion engines comprises a single receptacle 1 containing a sump 6 in which hot lubricating oil from the crank case 2 is collected, and a nest of tubes 14 through which air is drawn by a carburetter 3. The oil is withdrawn by a pump from the sump 6 through a filter 7 and is fed to the top of the cooler by a connection 9, whence it flows through perforations 15 in the housing 16 of a byepass valve 17 located at the base of the cooler. The nest of tubes is divided by a longitudinal passage 5, which is divided by a transverse partition to form a byepassing duct 13, the lower end of which is normally closed by the valve 17 ; the forward portion of the passage 5 provides direct communication between the engine crank case outlet 4a and the sump 6.
