Abstract

[Class 39 (i).] In circuits for amplifying radio and audio frequencies or for detecting and particularly in power output stages, distortion due to secondary emission from the anode of a screenedgrid valve when the anode voltage swings below the screen-grid voltage is avoided by biasing this grid to a positive potential with respect to the cathode equal to or less than the critical anode-cathode potential, usually 30-40 volts, below which the liberation of secondary electrons from the anode is negligible. As normal screen-grid valves so operated have a very high impedance, the electrodes are constructed and arranged to give an impedance of 500,000 ohms or less, preferably 50000-100,000 ohms, under the operating conditions, details of a valve with control and screen grids of wider mesh than usual being specified. The anode-cathode impedance may be less than 200,000 ohms with positive potentials of 120 volts and 40 volts on the anode and screen grid respectively, and with 1 volt negative on the control grid. Resistance or transformer couplings may be used.
