[Class 130.] The tobacco leaves are first passed through a loosening-device h, and the unloosened leaves are then separated from the loosened leaves by a device comprising two funnels a, b arranged one in front of the other, and in which the leaves are subjected to a current of air conveying the loosened leaves, together with dust and like impurities, into the second funnel b and through a conduit d to a sifting-drum m, for example as described in Specification 335,259, [Class 130, Tobacco]. The unloosened leaves fall through the funnel a into a container k, or on to a conveyer which carries them back for further treatment in the loosening- rolls h. Heavy foreign bodies are discharged into a chamber i on the funnel a. The current of air may be produced by a blast through a nozzle l, adjustable about a pivot, or by suction, and the action of the air current is varied by means of dampers /, g and an adjustable baffle p. The dust is carried away through a suction conduit n connected to the sifting-drum m, and the loosened leaves fall into a truck o or other conveying-device.
