[Class 21.] Containers of steel or other metal such as drums, bins and the like are strengthened at the ends by hoops of single or double channel section the bottom of the channel contacting the wall of the container while the flanges of the hoop project substantially normally. The hoops may also assist to secure the end closures. In Fig. 2 a channel hoop 3 is shown secured between a continuous or discontinuous abutment 2 and a flange 4. A permanent closure may be made by flanging over the edge 6 of a dished end 5. The joint may be treated with a caulking solution or may be soldered, or a strip of cotton, rubber, rubbered fabric, leather, &c. may be glued or otherwise secured to the flange of the end of the body or to the web of the channel hoop or to any or all of these. A removable end is shown in Fig. 4, a flange 7 of the closure being slotted radially at intervals and being secured by hammering and removed by a suitable lever. A packing ring may be provided beneath the flange 7. The channel ring may also be positioned as shown in Fig. 8. An end with a flange 14 curved to engage a double hoop 13 is shown in Fig. 9. The flange 14 may be formed separately and spun on the flange of the end. These two forms of end closure may be employed with a single channelled ring. A double channelled ring may be employed instead of the single channelled ring in any of the forms described.
