Abstract
378,543. Alloys ; hardening. FROST, T. H., 116, Riverway, Boston, U.S.A. May 18, 1931, No. 14628. Convention date, May 24, 1930. [Classes 72 and 82 (i).] Fine-edged blades for use in safety razors, pocketknives, surgeons' knives, cutlery, and edged tools, are made by treating an aluminium steel which may contain chromium or molybdenum, or tungsten, and which can be hardened by nitrogenizing with ammonia gas at a high temperature. Warping is prevented by protecting certain areas, such as 8, against the action of the gas. The alloy known as "Nitralloy" is preferred. The treated blade is given a final grinding. The preferred method of protection against the nitrogenizing action is to coat the metal with a paste of stannic oxide in water or glycerine. Alloys containing specified proportions of carbon, manganese, silicon, aluminium, chromium, sulphur, phosphorus, molybdenum, and iron are referred to.
