Abstract
437,372. Making composite rods and tools. TREMBOUR, M. R., Beaver, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. April 23, 1934, Nos. 12233 and 12234. Convention dates, April 22, 1933 and March 17, 1934. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] A composite metal bar, band, or tool, such as a hack-saw blade, plane-blade, or shearknife, is made by casting cheap, tough metal about one or more hard steel inserts 4, Fig. 12, having one or more keying ribs or grooves, rolling the ingot hot to reduce its thickness and weld the two metals and cutting the rolled body through the insert which may then be ground or machined to form a cutting edge. The insert may contain about 18 per cent of tungsten, 4 of chromium, and 1 of vanadium and may be annealed, cleaned, as by sand blast or pickling or both, and warmed before supporting in the mould 11 by a soft steel stirrup 12. To avoid distortion after rolling, as shown in Fig. 14, when more than one insert is employed the inserts may be shaped as shown in Fig. 15 or the mould walls bulge inwardly between the inserts. The tough steel may contain about 0À3 per cent of carbon, 1 of chromium, and a trace of vanadium. Bodies with more than one cutting edge may be produced similarly. The thin layer 14 of tough steal may be removed at any time after welding has been completed. The rolled body may be annealed prior to cutting.
