Abstract

Artificial filaments, yarns, straw, ribbons, &c. of improved pliability and flexibility are made by incorporating therein a small quantity of a finely divided inorganic or organic solid. The quantity must be insufficient to affect the lustre of the material. The method is particularly applicable to the manufacture of products made from organic derivatives of cellulose, but it may also be applied in the case of those of the reconstituted cellulose type. The finely divided material may be added to the spinning solution; or it may be incorporated in the formed products by treatment with a suspension, preferably in the presence of a swelling agent. Suitable substances to be so incorporated are metal oxides, carbonates, borates, phosphates, silicates such as china clay, talc, and mica; and organic substances such as diacetyl benzidine, diacetyl tolidine dibenzyl benzidine, naphthyl urea, anthraquinone, anthracene, and natural and synthetic resins; and to obtain the best results, the substance is preferably finely divided, for example, the particles thereof should be less than 0,1 to 10 microns. To the spinning solution there may also be added diethylene glycol, oils or fatty acids; and the solution containing the insoluble material is preferably thoroughly mixed and subjected to the usual filtrations. In examples, diacetyl benzidine, china clay or zinc oxide is added to a spinning solution of cellulose acetate, and a cellulose acetate yarn after treatment with a swelling agent is introduced into a heated bath containing freshly precipitated aluminium oxide and slightly acidified with hydrochloric acid.
